Barcelona and Surroundings

Barcelona hardly needs an introduction since it is one of the most interesting and lively cities in Europe. Situated on the Mediterranean coast, it has a wonderful climate: hot summers and mild sunny winters. Barcelona's climate and location, together with all the other attractions it offers make it one of the best destinations both for tourists and students.

The city offers a wide range of cultural attractions from the Picasso and Miró Museums to the Gaudí buildings, the cathedral, the Gothic Quarter etc. Not only does culture stand out in Barcelona but you will also find an exciting nightlife with bars and restaurants on every corner: the atmosphere is friendly, laid-back and stylish. There's nothing quite like a walk down Paseo de Gracia or the Ramblas - this stretch must be one of the most unique in the world.

The city's magnificent climate means that its streets, squares and parks are full of people enjoying the outdoor atmosphere and hospitality that the city is so famous for. Barcelona changes every season and, of course, during the summer you can enjoy the sunny weather, the sea and wonderful sandy beaches.

Near Barcelona:

There are many well-worth-a-visit places near Barcelona and which are within easy reach. We recommend the sandy beaches and rocky coves of the Costa Brava, the Dalí museum in Figueras and the Monastery of Monserrat. During the winter there is skiing in the nearby Pyrenees. An easy day trip can also be made to the impressive Montserrat Monastery and mountain.

You can discover more information about Barcelona via its official tourism page.

Las Palmas is one of the few destinations in the world where you can surf all year on the city beach. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ‘taperío’, trying different tapas or aperitifs, is very popular. The areas of Vegueta, Triana, el Puerto and Tafira are the usual places for trying some of these tapas at small terrace bars. If you want to see more of the island, it is easy and cheap to move around by bus, or as the locals know it "Gua Gua". The are holiday resorts in the South of the island, perfect for soaking up some sun. On the west you will find more rural areas with banana plantations and rocky beaches. In the centre of the island you will find a lush green zone with lots of pretty villages with multi-coloured houses and colonial wooden balconies. It is a great town to stay in. Places to visit include Muelle Uno, a leisure complex in the port and a new grass roots art district call SOHO. Why take the CELTA in Oviedo, Asturias?

A deeply historic city bursting with character, Oviedo offers scenic mountain views, plenty of shops, lively nightlife with lots of restaurants, and a bustling student population. You must visit  Oviedo's beautiful cathedral, Catedral de San Salvador, which is the city's centrepiece. Now a UNESCO world heritage site, the Cathedral dates from the 9th century with the chapel containing key symbols of medieval Spanish Christianity. Museo Arqueológico de Asturias is Oviedo's fascinating archaeology museum, with prehistoric items and an exhibition about the medieval kingdom of Asturias. A must-see when in the town. For more information on Oviedo, check out the official tourist information website.

Visit Asturias!

Once you have finished with your CELTA and have some spare time to explore, we recommend seeing more of the Asturias region. It's definitely one of Spain's best-kept secrets, as it's one of the rare parts of the country that sees more rain. This means that Asturias offers beautiful, green scenery all year round -- perfect if you enjoy the outdoors! You can visit the beaches in Costa Verde while you are in the region. It's known for having a dramatic coastline -- think rolling hills, hidden coves and rocky cliffs. It's a true spectacle to visit and great for a relaxing day out. Asturias is known for its specialty foods, which you must try. In Spain, the region is known as ‘El Pais de Queso‘ which in English is "The Land of the Cheese." Whereas Spain produces some fantastic cheeses, it's Asturias that offers over 100 different types of artisanal cheeses. While you are in the region, you can also visit a local dairy farm and watch the process. Along with their cheeses, the region produces its own cider. Unlike Swedish or Irish cider, Asturias' cider is flat and cloudy and not as sweet. Again, you will be able to find a cider tour which is a must. You can see more information about Oviedo via the official tourism website. [parent] => 1817 [count] => 9 [filter] => raw ) )

Valencia and Surroundings

Valencia on Spain’s eastern coast is the third biggest city in the country with a population of just over a million. Famous for its food (Valencia is home to paella and other typical rice dishes), music, ceramic craft-work and festivals (of which Fallas in March is the most spectacular). Valencia is also renowned throughout Spain for its lively nightlife. The climate is perhaps the most ideal in Spain, with short, mild winters, average temperature 10º to 15º C. July and August are the hottest months with an average temperature of about 32ºC. The central squares and streets of the old quarter boast of a time when Valencia was once the cultural and economic capital of the Mediterranean in the 15th and 16th centuries. However, Valencia is truly a modern city too, boasting ambitious urban projects and buildings in recent years, not least the magnificent City of Arts and Sciences.
