About the CELTA via Madrid, Spain

Introducing the CELTA

The CELTA is an initial qualification for anyone looking to teach English as a foreign language. Some may have limited teaching experience, but lack formal training, while others may have no previous teaching experience. What the CELTA does is open up a whole realm of exciting teaching opportunities around the world. Because it is awarded by Cambridge English Language Assessment, part of the world-famous University of Cambridge, you can rely on its quality and recognition. Over 10,000 people successfully complete a CELTA course each year.

CELTA is “the” TEFL qualification because of the following:

It is the most frequently sought-after qualification for TEFL jobs worldwide.

  • It offers real-life teaching practice with real students
  • It is moderated by the University of Cambridge every time a course runs, not just on an occasional basis
  • Tutors are highly qualified, experienced trainers in well-established teacher education centres

Who is the CELTA for?

In our many years of experience, we have found that the four most popular reasons for taking a CELTA are:

  • Travel relocation
  • Change of career
  • Progression in an English Language Teaching (ELT) career
  • Making the most of retirement

About the Cambridge CELTA Course

The Cambridge CELTA Certificate (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is an initial TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course in teaching English for candidates who have little or no previous experience in teaching English as a foreign language. The course is also suitable for those already in the ELT industry looking to broaden their knowledge and teaching techniques.

The CELTA qualification is an ELT (English Language Teaching) certificate, which incorporates TESL (Teaching English as Second Language) and TEFL (Teaching English as Foreign Language). It is acknowledged by international teaching centres throughout the world and is the most highly regarded TEFL qualification across the globe.

The course includes practical teaching with real foreign students in a classroom, observation of professional TEFL teachers and completion of a variety of relevant written assignments.

  • It provides you with a strong basis in English teaching practice and gives you self-confidence in a classroom environment,
  • It helps you learn TEFL techniques to improve your interaction with students;
  • It gives you a qualification that can open up opportunities around the world

CELTA Syllabus

The syllabus consists of five units of learning that deal with specific topic areas in the teaching of ESL:

  • Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
  • Language analysis and awareness
  • Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • Planning and resources for different teaching contexts
  • Developing teaching skills and professionalism

CELTA Course Entry Criteria

To be accepted for the CELTA course, applicants ideally should:

  • Have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into university
  • Be aged 18 or over
  • Have a standard of English which will enable you to teach at a range of levels. If you are not a native speaker you should have a command of the language at a strong C1 level (CAE, IELTS band 7.5 or equivalent). Please note that your English level will be assessed through the application process.

Centres may still accept you at their discretion if you do not match the education entry requirement, but are able to demonstrate relevant life experience. If you are not sure if you are eligible, email us at: info@studycelta.com and we will be happy to advise.

CELTA Course + Spanish Course (Face-to-Face CELTA)

If you are doing the full-time course there is no way you can take a Spanish course at the same time! You will need to devote all your time to CELTA and you need time to disconnect and relax. If you´re really keen to learn some Spanish during your trip to Madrid however, you might want to take a course before or after your CELTA course.

If you are doing the part-time course, we would recommend that you are doing something on the days when you are not doing CELTA. If you are teaching, then you can begin to put into practice what you are learning on the course. Or you could brush up your Spanish by taking a course.

The Spanish course is offered at any level , with international groups of students with other language learners.

Spanish Madrid
20 classes per week – €210 / per week (1-2 weeks)
20 classes per week – €205 / third week

CELTA Face-to-Face

If you prefer to learn in a physical classroom and want to go to your chosen location in person then the Face-to-Face CELTA is the course type for you. For this, you will need to attend all classes in person.

Please note, depending on where you are from, some people may need to apply for a visa as well. The centre should be able to assist or advise you on any necessary visa process during the interview stage of your application. We would advise you not to make any travel plans until you have been formally accepted onto a CELTA course,

Full-time

The traditional Full-time Face-to-Face CELTA is usually 4 weeks long (typically Monday-Friday) and normally requires you to attend classes during the daytime (e.g. 9am-5pm). Additional work is required outside of the classroom time.

Please refer to the specific details in the Dates and Fees table above for more precise information.

Part-time

The Part-time Face-to-Face CELTA varies in duration, but is usually over 10 weeks long. This course type ideal for people who want to study at a more relaxed pace and to continue with some other commitments (e.g. work, family, friends). Additional course work is required outside of the classroom time. For those who may need a visa to take a part-time face-to-face course in a different country, please note that these courses do not fulfil the requirement needed for a student visa.

CELTA Mixed Mode

The Mixed Mode CELTA format (you may have heard of this by its previous name the ‘Blended’ format) combines the face-to-face and online CELTA course. Essentially, the Mixed format gives you ‘the best of both worlds’, with a set time period of teaching practice done face-to-face as well as online learning. For the teaching practice element, this is both online and face-to-face. This means you are required to either be living near the training centre, or be willing to travel and stay near to the location for the duration of the face-to-face element of the course. Please note a visa may be required if you are looking to take the Mixed Mode course in a different country to the one you are living in.

Full-time

For the Mixed Mode Full-time CELTA course, the course will last between 4 and 6 weeks, and in most cases is Monday to Friday. Part of the course will be in person, and part will be online. Please note, trainees will need to do significant additional work outside of the core hours.

Part-time

Longer in duration, the Mixed Mode Part-time CELTA course, the course will usually last 10 weeks or more, and sessions could be any day of the week, often in the evenings. Details will be specified on the course information. It is ideal for people who wish to experience a location for a short time as part of their CELTA course. Part of the course will be in person, and part will be online.
