What to expect in Barletta, Italy

Situated in the south-eastern region of Italy, Barletta (in Puglia) sits on the picturesque Adriatic coast and is home to some beautiful beaches. The small city is home to just under 100,000 people, so there is plenty of life, without the chaotic feel that sometimes accompanies larger cities. With the city thought to be established around the 4th Century, Barletta offers a plethora of historic places and architecture. One such building is The Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre (not to be confused with the basilica in Jerusalem!), which is the main church in Barletta, featuring stunning Gothic architecture. A must, while you are staying in Barletta, is their ancient castle, which lies in the heart of the city. This castle was founded amongst the Norman conquest of Italy in the 11th Century and famously home to the "Disfida” (Challenge of Barletta). Catania, Sicily and Surroundings

Catania is situated near the world famous Mt Etna. Its elegant buildings are mostly the work of Baroque master Giovanni Vaccarini. Catania is Sicily’s second city – a thriving, entrepreneurial centre with a large university and a resilient population who live by the motto of carpe diem. Sicily is Italy's (and Europe's) most historically cosmopolitan region, having been ruled by Middle Eastern, North Africans and European powers during its history. It is a unique place full of art, archaeology, history, folklore and breathtaking scenery. And, of course, great food. Here are a few of the historic inhabitants of the island of Sicily to get you history buffs excited:
  • Archimedes taught here and Saint Paul preached here. It was a Greek colony, a Roman province, an Arab emirate and a Norman kingdom
  • Greek tyrants, Arab emirs, Norman knights, Byzantine bishops and Holy Roman Emperors, the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese and Jews all passed through here and left their indelible marks.
  • Their legacy: Phoenician settlements, Punic cities, Greek temples, Roman amphitheatres, Norman-Arab castles and Aragonese churches. Sicily has thirty centuries of history expressed in the Classical, the Romanesque, the Gothic, the Baroque and the present.

A stunning coastal city located in Southern Italy, Reggio Calabria offers golden beaches and scenic landscape; the perfect place to relax. There are few historical locations in Reggio Calabria as it suffered two catastrophic earthquakes in the late 19th and early 20th Century, meaning the downtown city was completely rebuilt and now offers more modern and neoclassic architecture. One historical building that survived was Aragon Castle, which now serves as an exhibition space in the centre of the city. Locally, there are Ancient Greek ruins and also a Roman bath, which offers a look into Reggio's past.
