Some people teach English for fun and then they get serious about it, so they take the CELTA Course. It’s kind of the other way around for me. I took the CELTA Course for fun and it got serious, so I teach.
I had no prior teaching experience when I took the course. After just one month, I was more than ready to switch to teaching career. The short intensive course was very practical, challenging and fulfilling.
We started teaching real learners right from day 1 and preparing lesson plans on the next day! I enjoyed the teaching practices the most. It was very interesting to experience how the lesson plan unfolded in real classroom environment and learn from it. It was also very rewarding knowing that the learners enjoyed and benefited from my lessons.
The CELTA tutors were truly inspiring. They always gave constructive feedbacks and advice, which helped me becoming better at teaching. The input sessions were highly effective and never boring. It brushed up our language awareness and equipped us with various teaching methods and approaches, as well as classroom management skills. I loved the way the tutors showed us the teaching methods by live demonstrations instead of telling us how to do it. It was memorable and impactful, as we got to learn those methods from the learners’ perspectives. I really appreciate the fact that they were genuinely interested in our personal developments throughout the course. They were always approachable, encouraging and supportive.
I wouldn’t lie that the CELTA course was easy. It was a lot of work for sure, but I had fun learning and teaching at the same time. I liked how the intensity of the course made me stay focused.
I feel that when your mind is focused at something, it’s natural for you to give your best. The teaching practices were nerve-wrecking, but once I focused on those motivated learners in front of me, I couldn’t get more nervous than them. I became less self-conscious and instead, focused more on the learners’ needs and helped them learn as much possible.
Overall, it was an eye-opening experience for me, both in teaching and the language itself. Having been an EFL/ESL learner myself, it made me view the language from a different point of view. There’s so much more to it than just grammar and vocabulary. I’ve also learnt the importance of focusing on the learners and incorporating communicative purpose in language teaching.
I’m currently teaching General English in Indonesia to young learners and teenagers, and about to teach EAP (English for Academic Purposes)classes in the near future. CELTA had made it significantly easier for me to switch to teaching career, even with zero teaching experience. I got a call-back from the institution I applied to within half an hour after I submitted my CV, and was offered the job after the interview the next day. CELTA is indeed a highly recognised qualification that will open the door to a new world of opportunities.
