Las Palmas and Surroundings
Gran Canaria is the meeting place for people from many different locations forming a blend of cultures and a rich history as one of the world's oldest and most important ports. In the past it was the last European port of call, prior to setting off on a long ocean voyage.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has kilometres of beach and ideal climatic conditions which allow the beaches to be used all year round. Las Palmas is one of the few destinations in the world where you can surf all year on the city beach.
In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ‘taperío’, trying different tapas or aperitifs, is very popular. The areas of Vegueta, Triana, el Puerto and Tafira are the usual places for trying some of these tapas at small terrace bars.
If you want to see more of the island, it is easy and cheap to move around by bus, or as the locals know it "Gua Gua". The are holiday resorts in the South of the island, perfect for soaking up some sun. On the west you will find more rural areas with banana plantations and rocky beaches. In the centre of the island you will find a lush green zone with lots of pretty villages with multi-coloured houses and colonial wooden balconies.
