Montreal and surroundings

The largest city in the French Canadian province of Quebec, Montreal is a cultural melting pot of old-world European charm and modern North American metropolis. It's known as 'Canada's Cultural Capital', and plays host to several music and arts festivals in the city centre.

The city is also a great place to study; in 2015, QS World University Rankings ranked Montreal the 8th-best place in the world to be a student. It's home to well-established baseball, football and, of course, ice hockey teams, and hosts the Canadian Grand Prix annually.

Montreal is also home to notable 19th and 20th-century architecture, such as Notre-Dame de Montréal Basilica, Bonsecours Market, and the 19th‑century headquarters of all major Canadian banks on Rue Saint Jacques. Saint Joseph's Oratory, the Université de Montréal main building, the Place Ville Marie office tower, and the controversial Olympic Stadium, are all examples of 20th-century architecture.
