Skopje

Skopje is the capital and largest city of North Macedonia, and home to half a million people. It is the country's cultural, political,  economic, and academic centre. It has a deep history, and has been inhabited since at least 4000 BC.

A key location in the Balkans, a fascinating and distinct region of Europe and a real cauldron of historical events, Skopje bears marks and traits of a huge range of cultural, political and social influences. These include being part of the Ottoman and Roman empires, being behind the 'Iron Curtain' after the Second World War as part of Yugoslavia and fresh aspects following the Independence of Macedonia in 1991.
