Athens and Surroundings
Athens is one of the key cities in the history of Western Civilization. A bustling city that is home to around 4 million people, Athens is steeped in history, and has been populated for over 3,400 years. This can be seen in some of the landmarks of the city, such as the Acropolis and the imposing Parthenon that sits atop it, Ancient Agora and the Panathenaic Stadium (built in the 4th century BC and restored to host the first modern Olympic Games in 1896). Athens is known as the birthplace of democracy and is has a philosophy, arts and learning in general. You are following in the footsteps of some of the world's greatest thinkers (such as Socrates and Plato) if you choose to Athens as your place of learning!
Aside from its ample and fascinating history, modern Athens is an extremely vibrant and interesting place to visit. It has a strong coffee shop and market culture (be sure to check out Monastiraki Flea Market). The food on offer in the city is delicious (try the moussaka, dolmades, fresh fish and gyros) and abundant and you will never be short of interesting things to do.
However, remember that CELTA courses, in particular, are extremely intensive. If this is your first visit to Athens, do build in time either before or after your course to look around as you probably won't get a lot of time to do so during your CELTA!
