About the English Teacher Training Centre in Torbay, UK

The English teacher training centre in Torbay has been running CELTA courses successfully since 1996 and Delta courses since 2005. It is based in one of Torbay's largest year-round language schools. It is close to both the sea front and the station. It is located in the St Michaels area and is accessible via Paignton Station. Paignton pier and the Eastern Esplanade are a short walk away from the centre.

Lara Leonard - CELTA

Lara has been a CELTA Trainer now for 10 years plus, both at the Torbay centre and recently in China. She also has over 27 years’ experience of teaching at all levels, including General English, Business English, speciality courses, Exam Courses (Cambridge and IELTS) and one-to-one students. She never tires of teaching! Being in the classroom as much as she is, she is well able to advise and support trainees with the practicalities and realities of life in the classroom, and deliver the CELTA with enthusiasm and a smile.

Geoff Dowson - CELTA

Geoff has been a CELTA trainer for seven years and although he no longer works full-time for the training centre in Torbay, he returns regularly to help with CELTA courses. Geoff has a Degree in Applied Psychology with a special interest in ergonomics and assessment. Other qualifications include TEFL Prep Cert, Diploma TEFL, LCCIEB.

Geoff migrated to EFL teaching from manufacturing and retail business in 1988 and has worked in Spain, India, Holland and the UK. He has managed summer courses, residential and non-residential for OISE and TLC. Geoff held ADOS position for StudyCELTA Torbay and DOS for Inlingua, Cheltenham and StudyCELTA Torbay as Head of the Business Centre and as a Teacher Trainer. At present he is Director of Education for Tellus Group with overall responsibility for their Meridian Schools in Plymouth and Portsmouth.

Sheila Smaller - CELTA

After leaving university in 1988 with a BA in Modern Languages and European Studies, Sheila went to live in Paris. There, she started teaching English to French students and after two years decided to return to England to continue her EFL career.

She did her CELTA in 1991 and after several more years’ experience studied for the Dip. TEFLA (Delta) in 1998. In 2001, Sheila trained to become a CELTA tutor. Over the last 12 years she has been a course tutor on a regular basis at Torbay and supported new tutors in training.

Iona Lunan - CELTA

Iona has a BA in English Language from Cardiff University, a post graduate certificate in Applied Linguistics from Anglia Ruskin University, and is Delta qualified, gaining her diploma at International House, Barcelona.

Iona began her teaching career in Barcelona in 1990. She has taught EFL to adults and children, ESOL to asylum seekers, academic English to university students, exam preparation classes, and business English. She has always enjoyed the variety of teaching for different needs and levels, however it is teacher training that Iona finds most rewarding.

"Although I have trained on many courses, in different culture contexts, each one is unique, there’s always something for me to learn. It’s the people that make the course what it is, the trainees, their students as well as the tutors, and how we all work together to create a positive and supportive group dynamic."

Her 14 years as a CELTA trainer include instructing in programmes at Torbay, UK; International House, Madrid, Spain; Coleg Glan Hafren, Cardiff, UK; Oxford House, Barcelona, Spain; Embassy CES, Cambridge, UK; Eurocentres, Alexandria, USA; and The Language Academy, Fort Lauderdale, USA.

Iona’s other interests include languages, music and writing, she is currently studying Italian, learning to play the clarinet and guitar, and writing a collection of short stories.

Known as the, ahem, "English Riviera", Torbay is  known for its unspoilt coastline offering some breathtaking views. Torbay comprises of a 22 mile stretch of over 20 safe beaches and secluded coves. So you’re sure to find a beach to suit.

Torbay, as well as a popular family holiday resort, has, over recent years, become really popular with the diving community. It has many beaches suitable as places to learn and others for the more experienced diver where you can enjoy more challenging wreck diving.

Given it's atmosphere, beauty and weather in summer, Torbay is a popular destination for foreign students who come to learn English.
