Take the CELTA Online via Melbourne (Carlton)

The option to take the CELTA completely online has been approved by Cambridge Assessment (the accrediting body of the CELTA) and will continue to be an option for you going forward.  You will be able to take the CELTA from the comfort and safety of your own home from anywhere in the world. The online CELTA, this will hold exactly the same weight as a face-to-face course. On the CELTA certificate that you would receive after successfully completing the CELTA, there would be no mention of the course being online. The online CELTA has exactly the same content, with the format allowing you to take it from home.

Melbourne (Carlton) are now offering the CELTA completely online.

Will I be assessed differently on the CELTA Online?

No, you will be learning the same content and syllabus as the face to face CELTA. The only difference is that you will be taking the CELTA online and using software such as Zoom and you will be using Cambridge's Learning platform (Moodle).

You will be assessed the same way and that is through;

  • Participation
  • Four written assignments
  • A minimum of six hours assessed teaching practice

The latter is one of the most important aspects of your CELTA, which will be done via Zoom.

How will the teaching practice be different via the CELTA Online?

As mentioned, the teaching practice will be hosted on Zoom and you will be observed by a qualified CELTA Tutor as you teach an English language class to a group of language learners. You will also be observed by your CELTA classmates (and you will get the opportunity to observe them!).

Your tutor will offer continual constructive feedback to help you develop as an English language teacher.

Will it say "online" on my certificate?

No, it will state that you have obtained a CELTA. The certificate will be identical to a student who have taken the CELTA face-to-face.

What are the requirements for taking the CELTA 100% Online?

The eligibility requirements are still the same for taking the CELTA 100% Online. These requirements are:

  1.  That you are 18 or over
  2.  That you have a high language and grammar awareness or have an English language proficiency score of an IELTS 7.5 or a high C1
  3. That you have the qualifications that makes you eligible for higher education e.g. university (otherwise life experience can be taken into account)

For the online learning, we do recommend you also have:

  1.  A good internet connection
  2. A laptop or desktop computer with speakers and a microphone
  3. A designated and comfortable working space at home

CELTA Course Aims

In its form as a 4-week intensive TEFL course, the Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults dates back to the 1970’s when it was known as the Royal Society of Arts CTEFLA. In 1988, the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) assumed joint responsibility with the RSA for these training courses. The Cambridge CELTA Certificate is the most widely recognised pre-service ELT qualification throughout the world.

The CELTA provides training to people with little or no previous experience in teaching English to adults (ESL, TESL, TEFL) and is therefore very practical in content.

The course aims to increase candidates’ language awareness and develop competence in communicative language teaching as well as an understanding of current teaching methodologies.

The CELTA is the leading TESOL certificate worldwide, for ESL teaching jobs both in Australia and overseas.

CELTA Entry Criteria

Candidates must:

  • be at least 20 years of age (applicants over 18 may be interviewed in exceptional cases.)
  • have a good educational background (preferably of university entrance standard.)
