The facilities were good and always availability of laptops and study space. There was always someone available to help if there were any problems and even though there were only two printers available, everyone still got their work printed on time!
The grounds of my success on passing the CELTA was due to the guidance of my tutors Lizzie and Makkie and my coursemates.
They prepare you for how intense it will be (and trust me it is intense) but I still would have not had it any other way. It helped me work so hard and become extremely self reflective within a month.
They were there for my coursemates and I anytime we needed but also encouraged our independence and creativity. Their input lessons were always insightful and a lot of effort went in to teach us in a short amount of time. Both of them were mentors as well as teachers and I have learnt so much from them.
I had quit my job from Samsung and decided the next day to do a CELTA. I started the course with no teaching experience but the passion to learn and experience of training and a creative background.
The last month has been a roller-coaster of emotions. From meeting a group of 12 people (my coursemates) who became my teaching family to learning the skill of teaching (and still learning), the course has been one of the most rewarding things I have had the pleasure of achieving in my life.
I have learnt my strengths as a person and weaknesses that I can work on as a teacher.
I would give four main pieces of advice for someone interested in taking this course:
– If you have not taught before, try to do some preliminary reading on grammar, textbooks on teaching
– Prepare yourself for a range of emotions.
If you are as lucky as I am, you will have 10+ other people experiencing everything you will be and the support of your coursemates will help you through it. I am not trying to say you will need therapy after, but understand that anything worthwhile is hard work and expect to be dedicated to striving on.
At the same time, it is the most elating experience when you finally understand what you are doing right and are able to apply your personal touches to what they teach you.
– Really pay attention to what you are learning and try to absorb it. You will have to apply it almost immediately. When you are having input sessions where you are not learning skills and observing other teachers on the course, pay close attention to their teaching style, the structure they use to achieve the aims of the lesson and their strengths. You will pick up a lot of useful methods to incorporate into your lessons
– Enjoy it.
As intensive as it is, I have found myself terribly missing it already (and it has only been three days). This is not just a qualification but an opportunity to meet like-minded people and improve on yourself.
I am planning to move to Barcelona and would like to teach Business English or Legal.
