Before deciding to complete my CELTA qualification, I had been fortunate enough to have had some English teaching experience both in Manchester and in Derry, and this gave me a real taste for education and language learning. After doing some research and talking to previous CELTA students, I decided to apply for the course, and I can honestly say it was the best academic decision I have ever made.
Having been advised beforehand of the intensity of the four week course, I knew that it would be a challenge and would require great focus and organisation, but we couldn’t have had better support. Both trainers were so generous with their time, and their commitment to our student group and to the course was so apparent in the perfectly structured timetable and the abundance of extra notes and pointers they provided us with every day.
It is bizarre how a group of strangers can become a little family in four short weeks, but the combination of hard work, peer support and fun brought us all together, with the whole group passing the course! Since completion, I have been working in at the teacher training centre in Derry as an English teacher, and the techniques and skills that I gained from the CELTA have been incomparable – my lessons are efficient and successful and I know that my employment opportunities are much greater now.
As for location, the school is right in the centre of the city just inside Derry’s walls, and if you find that you have some free time to spend outside of course hours, you can submerge yourself in this wonderfully cultural and historical city, while getting to know the friendly locals. I honestly couldn’t recommend the CELTA course enough – it really is your ticket to the rest of the world!
