About Austin, Texas, and its Surroundings

Austin Texas just rolls off the tongue because it's one of those cities that form an intrinsic part of North American culture. It was originally a settlement named Waterloo, populated by immigrants from Germany, Sweden and Mexico. However periods of accelerated growth made it the renamed state capital in 1839. By 1883, Austin had become a college town with the founding of the University of Texas at Austin.

The city has a real buzz and is known as the "Live Music Capital of the World®". There is live music from the terminal at Austin's airport to everywhere in Austin. Musicians play in everything from grocery stores (Central Market, Whole Foods) to city council meetings. Name a music legend and you'll be hard pushed to find one who hasn't performed live in Austin.

Festivals and events include Blues on the Green series, Austin City Limits, South by Southwest, Pachanga Latino Musical Festival, Urban Music Festival, Fun, Fun, Fun Fest, Chaos in Texas and many more.

We suggest that if you are a visitor to Austin, you should arrange to take in the sights, delights and sounds of Austin either before or after your CELTA course as you will not have time during the course to enjoy the tantalizing amount of things to see and do here.

Accommodations for Trainees Near the Centre in Los Angeles

Applicants can discuss their accommodation needs during their interview with the Los Angeles CELTA course tutor, part of the free application process. Alternatively, trainees are welcome to organise their own accommodation, using websites such as www.airbnb.com and www.booking.com.

Koreatown, Los Angeles, California, and Surroundings

Koreatown in Los Angeles is a real LA story. It was a "scene" in the 1920s and 30s and since then it has had period of mass immigration, unrest and resurrection. Today, this part of town is a favourite for a locals keen to try out its fantastic food and soak up the vibes.

Koreatown is west of downtown and south of Hollywood and is considered part of the Mid-Wilshire district. Wherever you go in Koreatown, you'll hear Korean, Spanish and English, and often a mashup of all three languages, which, as a budding applied linguist, should really fascinate you. It's called 'translanguaging' and is very cool!

The fusion in the area is reflected in its culinary scene too. Be sure to explore the distinct food on offer, such as Roy Choi's Kogi tacos!

One thing though. Koreatown doesn't sleep. Choose a quiet spot to get some good rest and wait for after the CELTA course to try out the nightlife!

You can see more about Koreatown, Los Angeles here. You can also visit the official tourism page for Los Angeles.

Washington DC

Washington is a diverse city with just over 700,000 inhabitants with a metropolitan area of around 6.2 million. It's serviced by a metro, a rapid transit system and a circular bus. Public transport is really popular because the city can get congested. The famous Washington Post, exposer of the Watergate Scandal, many many memorials as well as the National Mall make Washington D.C. a great place for history buffs. Being the heart of statehood and politics in the USA, Washington's National Mall sees it's share of protests and rallies, which makes the city interesting. Archives in the city are rich in founding national documents and the city also boasts many cultural centres and museums - kind of like a mix between NY and Boston cultures. There is always something going on in Washington and tons of free cultural events.

Washington D.C. is also centrally located with a mild climate which is very easy to deal with - no serious big freezes. The the beach, the mountains, or several cities including DC, Baltimore, Annapolis, Wilmington, Philadelphia, and New York are a day trip away.
