Darwin and Surroundings

Darwin, the capital of the vast state of Northern Territory in Australia, is a relaxed city of around 150,000 people. Situated on the coast at the north-central tip of Australia, its location means that it has a tropical climate, with a distinct wet and dry season. The dry season runs from about May to September, with the wet season between December and March.

Named after the world-famous naturalist Charles Darwin, the city is surrounded by a plethora of fascinating natural aspects. CELTA candidates can enjoy treats such as the ecologically diverse wildlands of the Charles Darwin National Park on the edge of the city, Berry Spring (a popular swimming location), Litchfield's waterfalls or even just enjoying the sunset at the Esplanade, enjoying its stunning ocean views.

The city boasts plenty of nightlife, with restaurants and bars aplenty, while there are plenty of free options to enjoy too. These include the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory about the local heritage and aboriginal culture, as well as the markets on Mindil Beach, Nightcliff and Parap where CELTA trainees can try delicious and varied cuisines and see live music and entertainment. The Darwin Festival and Darwin International Film Festival are also  well worth checking out. On top of this, Darwin’s cost of living is lower than in bigger cities like Sydney or Melbourne, making it a more affordable option for you to enjoy this unique part of the world.
