About the Delta course in Bournemouth, UK
The Diploma in English language teaching to Adults, commonly referred to as Delta, is one of the most highly-respected English teaching qualifications and aims to provide specialised training for experienced English language teachers.
The Training Centre in Bournemouth was involved in the first round of piloting the Delta in the UK in 1998 and since then has successfully run full-time and part-time Delta courses. The scheme is administered by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate who approve centres to run courses and every course is moderated by an external assessor.
To offer candidates who have substantial experience of teaching English to adult speakers of other languages the opportunity to:
- deepen your understanding of the principles and practice of teaching the English language to adults;
- examine your current practices and beliefs;
- apply the results of your learning and reflection to your current teaching position and more senior roles.
Delta Entry Criteria
- be at least 21 years old by the start of the course.
- have a standard of education which would allow you to enter higher education in your own country and normally have undertaken some formal course of training in ELT to adults at either a pre-service or in-service level.
- have a minimum of two years full time / 1200 hours teaching experience of ELT to adults within the past five years and will normally have a range of teaching experience involving work in different contexts. Experience with students at different levels is essential.
- have a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables you to follow the course and complete all assessed elements successfully.

Delta Course Content
- The course combines theory and practice. It includes:
- Work on language systems
- Learning theories and their implication for teaching/learning
- Consideration of a range of methodologies and their practical application in the classroom
- The principles of syllabus and course design; the evaluation of materials and aids
- Formal and informal assessment
- Error analysis and correction
- Ways of extending learning beyond the classroom
Sessions take the form of seminars, lectures, workshops and tutorials.
You will be expected to draw on your own teaching experience and to contribute actively to all sessions. Lesson observation and teaching practice are an integral part of the course. In addition to hours spent on the course, you will be expected to read widely and complete regular written assignments which will be continuously assessed by course tutors and discussed in tutorial sessions
Module One focuses on the theories behind how people learn languages and how they are taught and will look at:
- theoretical perspectives on language acquisition and language learning
- different approaches and methodologies including current developments
- language systems and learners' linguistic problems
- language skills and learners' problems
- knowledge of resources, materials and reference sources
- key concepts and terminology related to assessment
Module Two focuses on the theory and practice of teaching and the different ways that environment, society and culture affect the way that it works. It will look at:
- the language learner and the language learning context
- preparation for teaching adult learners of English.
- evaluating, selecting and using resources and materials for teaching purposes
- managing and supporting learning
- evaluation of lesson preparation and teaching
- observation/evaluation of other teachers' lessons
- professionalism and opportunities for professional development
Module Three focuses on a specialist option (e.g. YL, ESOL, ESP, 1-1) and achieves this through a focus on the main types of syllabus and the methods for conducting needs analysis within different English language teaching specialisms.
Candidates are introduced to research skills and the theory and techniques behind assignment planning and syllabus design. Module Three also looks at assessment and its impact on syllabus content and teaching methodology.
Delta Assessment and Grading
A Delta certificate is awarded on successful completion of each module.
Module One is assessed via 2 x 90-minute written examinations,
Module Two is assessed via a portfolio of coursework, including observed lessons, written assignments, and an externally-assessed lesson observation.
Module Three is assessed via an extended written assignment on a specialist area.
Delta Course Format
The part-time Delta course is designed for candidates teaching in the Bournemouth, Dorset and Hampshire areas and is programmed over eight months on two evenings a week. Teaching practice and lesson observation take place at the candidate’s own school. Candidates will sit the examinations on completion of the first term in December.
The full-time Delta course lasts just over eight weeks and is highly intensive. We arrange teaching practice at the centre. Candidates will sit the examination immediately following the course in either June or December.

- If you believe you cover the minimum requirements to be considered as a candidate for any of the courses mentioned above make an initial application for the course that interests you.
- Prospective trainees must complete the pre-interview task, fill in the enrolment form and return them by email to the Programmes Coordinator prior the course starting date. When emailing the documents, attaching an updated version of the prospective trainees CV is also necessary.
- It is recommended to this well in advance, however, last minute applications may be accepted when the availability on the course allows this.
- Applicants who have satisfactorily completed the application package and tasks included in it may be invited to attend an interview shortly after this date at the school or on the telephone (at your own cost) if you are overseas.
- Successful applicants will receive an "offer of a place" on the course of their choice immediately, if there is a place available.
- After receiving an invoice from the School, the deposit must be paid within 7 days of the place being offered in order to secure your place.
- The balance is due 4 weeks, at the latest, before the course starts, depending on the date of acceptance.
Conditions of Enrolment
- Total fees are payable at least 30 days before the start of the course. Where registration is made less than 30 days before the start of the course, total fees are payable immediately.
- Neither the school nor its representatives are liable for loss of tuition or other services due to public disturbance, industrial action or factors outside their control. Refunds cannot be made under any of these circumstances.
- Neither the School nor its representatives are liable for any loss, damage, illness, or injury to persons or property, however caused, except where such liability is statutory. Students are advised to take out personal insurance to cover these risks, and also to cover course cancellation or curtailment.
- Cancellation must be notified in writing to the school at least 4 weeks before the start of the course. For cancellations received less than 4 weeks before the course starts, 4 weeks’ fees or a pro-rata equivalent will be charged. Acceptance of an enrolment is made on the understanding that the student will remain for the duration of the course as specified.
- In the event of a student being dismissed before the end of the specified course period, fees are not refundable.
- Curtailment of a course must be notified 4 weeks before the published course or term end-date.
- The school reserves the right to refuse an enrolment, or in the event of unsatisfactory attendance, work or conduct, to dismiss a student from the course.
- No fees are refundable in the case of late- or non-arrival for a course.
- Late entrants may be accepted on all courses, but only by the agreement of the School.
- Any damage to school, student house, homestay or private home property, whether intentional or not, must be paid for in full.
