About CELTA Courses Derry, United Kingdom

The Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) is the most highly regarded, internationally recognised English teaching (TEFL) qualification.

CELTA is an initial qualification for people with little or no previous teaching experience and opens up a whole world of exciting teaching opportunities. Because it is awarded by Cambridge ESOL, part of the world-famous University of Cambridge, you can rely on its quality and recognition. More than 12,000 people successfully complete a CELTA course each year.

Teaching English to speakers of other languages can be a highly rewarding career, offering you the chance to live and work in different countries.

CELTA course recognition

TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) is highly regulated in the UK and Ireland. To work in an official language school, teachers need a relevant qualification that includes real life teaching practice. The CELTA qualification meets all the criteria sought by accrediting bodies. In fact, CELTA is the benchmark certificate-level TEFL qualification.

The course is suitable for people who:

  • want to work in TEFL
  • already work in TEFL but who need a solid teaching qualification
  • require a solid grounding in teaching methods and the language syllabus
  • want an internationally recognised qualification

CELTA Course Content and Assessment

The CELTA course covers the following main topics:

  • learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
  • language analysis and awareness
  • language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • planning and resources for different contexts
  • developing teaching skills and professionalism

You will be assessed throughout the course, with no final examination. An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge ESOL, moderates each course.

There are two main components of assessment:

Teaching Practice

You will teach for a total of six hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance at the end of the six hours.

Written Assignments

You will complete four written assignments: one focusing on adult learning; one on the language system of English; one on language skills; and one on classroom teaching.

You will also be assessed on the following:

  • Attendance and promptness: 100% course attendance is mandatory
  • Your professional attitude towards the coursework and your peers, within the classroom, tutorials and teaching practice

To be awarded the CELTA Certificate, you must pass all components. There are three passing grades: Pass, Pass B and Pass A
