The latter is one of the most important aspects of the CELTA course. You will be teaching live to a class of English language learners from across the globes and you will be observed by a qualified CELTA Tutor. These sessions usually last for 45 minutes and then you will receive constructive feedback from your Tutor in the designated feedback sessions.
What is required to take the CELTA Online?
A part from the usual CELTA requirements, which are:
- 18 or over
- Native English speaker or a level equivalent to an IELTs 7.5 or Cambridge C1
- Qualification that will allow you to access higher education (e.g. university)
We also recommend that you have:
- A working computer or laptop
- Headphones
- A microphone
- A strong internet connection (minimum bandwidth 600kpbs and a minimum of 1.5 Mbps – check speed at www.speedtest.net)
- A designated working area
Will it say “online” on my CELTA certificate?
No it won’t disclose how you took the course. It will just say that you have obtained a CELTA.
Recommended Reading for CELTA Courses
Practical English Usage
Michael Swan - Read an Interview with the Author
As I was preparing to take the TEFL course to teach abroad and inquiring about the different books that the school was suggesting, I was told simply by my son who is also a teacher and the statement was confirmed by both my instructors, "just buy Swan, it's the bible and it's all you need". Practical English Usage is just that. For whatever reason Michael Swan decided to write this book, we are forever grateful. - Margaret M. Frye 5/5

Learning Teaching
Jim Scrivener - Read an Interview with the Author
"Learning Teaching" has been one of the most successful guides to English since it was first published in 1994. Its no-nonsense approach has made it a superb teaching textbook for initial training courses, and also an essential handbook for practising ELT teachers. The third edition has been extensively revised and restructured to take recent developments in ELT into account and now includes a DVD featuring a full lesson being taught as well as demonstrations of practical teaching techniques.

A Concise Grammar for English Teachers
Tony Penston - Read an Interview with the Author
I used Tony Penston's book when I was learning how to teach English as a Foreign Language. I found it really useful then and I still carry it with me for all teaching assignments - and I regularly refer to it for some grammatical point or other. It's easy to find what you want and nice and concise! It gets straight to the point. Apparently he's even got a sense of humour too, rarely seen in a grammarian, and a relief to this user. This really good book is useful for all teaching levels. Great value too. I do not hesitate to recommend it to all English language teachers. - John Osman 5/5

What is the CELTA course?
CELTA is the most highly recognised and regarded initial English teaching certification worldwide. It’s awarded by the University of Cambridge’s English Language Assessment, meaning you can rely on the CELTA's quality and accreditation. Every year, more than 10,000 people the world over complete a CELTA course.
It is the most widely sought after TEFL/TESOL certificate by employers worldwide.
CELTA Course Aims
The main aim of the CELTA course is to provide introductory training if you have little or no previous experience of teaching languages. It may also be suitable if you have some experience, but little previous training.
CELTA Course Entry Requirements
- The minimum age is 18
- Applicants must have a standard of education which would allow entry to Higher Education.
- They must also have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to follow the course and have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become an effective teacher and to complete successfully the written assignments and the assessment of teaching practice.

Find a TEFL Job Post CELTA
As a StudyCELTA trainee, you will be able to sign up for free to our TEFL jobs website www.teflwork.com. TEFLwork is a platform only for qualified English teachers and will allow you to find work both at home and abroad with your newly gained CELTA certificate.
CELTA Course Content
The course is highly practical in emphasis and will require a lot of hard work and commitment from you.
It is designed to enable you to:
- develop your language awareness
- appreciate the cultural and individual needs of learners
- become familiar with the principles and practice of effective English language teaching
- develop basic skills for teaching adults
- identify and exploit appropriate resources and materials
- identify opportunities for future professional development
You will be kept fully informed of your progress and will have the opportunity to discuss your work in detail during your individual tutorials.
The CELTA is awarded to those who pass each of the two assessed components of the course:
- Planning and teaching
- Classroom-related written assignments
The assessment is validated by an external assessor, appointed by Cambridge, who visits the course to assess the general standard of the course work. There is no final practical or written examination.
With your certificate we provide a written report, indicating your strengths and weaknesses, and certificates and reports are sent out approximately one month after the end of the course, when the results have been validated by Cambridge.
