The language centre in Santiago de Compostela now offers the Cambridge University accredited CELTA Certificate (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults). It is an initial TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course in teaching English for individuals who have little or no previous experience in teaching English as a foreign language. The course is also suitable for those already in the ELT industry looking to broaden their knowledge and teaching techniques.

The CELTA qualification is an ELT (English Language Teaching) certificate, which incorporates TESL (Teaching English as Second Language) and TEFL (Teaching English as Foreign Language). It is acknowledged by international teaching centres throughout the world and is the most highly regarded TEFL qualification in the UK.

The course includes practical teaching with real foreign students in a classroom, observation of professional TEFL teachers and completion of a variety of relevant written assignments.

CELTA Course Entry Criteria

To be accepted for the CELTA courses in Santiago de Compostela, applicants must fulfil the following criteria:

  • A minimum age of 18 at the start of the CELTA course
  • A good standard of education (e.g. having gained university entrance qualifications, i.e. high school diploma)
  • Awareness and high level of competence in written and spoken English in order to be able to follow the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels
  • For non-native speakers, the required command of English is that of Proficiency (CPE), IELTS 7.5-9.0 , TOEIC 945+ points,  i.e. close to native speaker's competence.

CELTA Syllabus

The syllabus consists of five units of learning that deal with specific topic areas in the teaching of ESL:

  • Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
  • Language analysis and awareness
  • Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • Planning and resources for different teaching contexts
  • Developing teaching skills and professionalism

CELTA Course Assessment in Santiago de Compostela

Assessment overview

You are assessed continuously during the course and there is no final examination. An external assessor from the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) moderates each course. Teachers at the centre in Santiago de Compostela will offer you help to prepare for your assessments. It should be noted that the assessment will not be based on your performance on any one occasion, but will be related to your progress on the CELTA course and will include evaluation on your ability to respond to feedback from the tutor and your peers. The Assessor may observe input sessions, read samples of written work and so on, to ensure that the assessment process is as fair as possible.

Assessment framework

There are two components:

Component 1: Planning and teaching

Component 2: ESL Classroom-related written assignments (between 750-1000 words each)

The written assignments are:

  • Adult learning and learning contexts
  • The English language system
  • Language skills
  • Classroom teaching and the identification of action points

CELTA Grading System

The Cambridge CELTA course has 4 grades:


Most candidates receive a Pass. This grade is awarded to those who show they understand the basics of teaching practice and relevant knowledge in the written assessments.

They may need support or guidance from future TEFL employers to help them to develop in the industry at first.

Pass (Grade B)

Less people receive a Pass B grade. It demonstrates that the candidate has shown they can complete teaching practice and written assignments at a significantly higher level than that required to meet pass-level criteria.

They will need much less support in their first TEFL job as they will be able to build upon methods learned on the CELTA course.

Pass (Grade A)

A very small percentage of candidates receive this grade. It is awarded to candidates whose performance in the written assignments meets the specified criteria and who have demonstrated in their ESL teaching practice a level of ability and achievement and a level of awareness significantly higher than that required to meet pass-level criteria in relation to:
