About the CELTA Course in Quito, Ecuador

The CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults) is the industry standard initial English language teaching certificate. It is renowned as one of the most thorough and well-recognised English teacher training course, and is accepted by employers worldwide.

The CELTA is accredited and externally moderated by Cambridge English Language Assessment ('Cambridge English'), which is a part of the University of Cambridge.

The CELTA involves 120 hours of contact time with internationally experienced and Cambridge English-approved trainers, all of whom hold the CELTA, Delta or Masters degrees in English teaching.

The course also includes six hours of assessed teaching practice experience and six hours of observations of experienced English language teaching professionals. You will also undertake assisted lesson planning workshops, constructive feedback sessions and tutorials.

The CELTA course enables you to become familiar with the principles of effective teaching. You will acquire a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners and demonstrate that you are able to apply these skills in a real teaching context. When you finish the course, you will be able to successfully begin working in a variety of English teaching contexts around the world.

CELTA Course Content and Assessment

The course follows the Cambridge CELTA syllabus. The following is an overview of the topics covered:

  • The general principles and techniques of teaching and learning a foreign language
  • The English language: linguistic form, function, meaning and phonology
  • Teaching and learning the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing
  • Classroom techniques: presentation, practice, checking learning, error analysis, correction, classroom management, group work and pair work
  • Lesson planning; course planning; timetables
  • Different learning and teaching styles at adult level, adult learners' motivations and learning styles
  • Other factors that affect learning such as adult literacy
  • The evaluation and use of published and non-published resources and materials along with learning how to adapt authentic materials into concrete learning tools.
  • Professional development: evaluating one's own strengths and weaknesses, preparing to become a teacher, colleague and employee

The course consists of several parts:

  • Teaching practice
  • Input sessions
  • Written assignments
  • Assisted lesson planning

Before each lesson you teach, you will have one-on-one contact with your teaching practice tutor.


You will also observe professional English language teachers throughout the course, as well as sit in on teaching practice lessons from your peers. You will be involved in the feedback process for your peers’ practice lessons.


After observing your peers teach, you will provide them with feedback on their lessons. Your tutor will guide feedback sessions and contribute with his/her own suggestions and comments.

You will also receive feedback from your peers and tutors on your own practice lessons.

Input Sessions

These are led by course tutors and cover all key aspects of English language teaching such as methodology, lesson planning, learning an unknown language, teaching grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Course assignments will also be set and discussed during these input sessions.

Written Assignments

You will complete four written assignments during the course. Each of these assignments will be between 750 and 1,000 words, not including extra materials, lesson plans, samples of students’ writing,and results of questionnaires. In addition to these written assignments, you will have to submit lesson plans, observation sheets and self-evaluations for observed and taught lessons.

The CELTA assessment is made not only on your ability to teach and your language awareness, but also on your overall professional attitude and behaviour.

Assessment of candidates is by the course tutors and is continuous but the course will also be moderated by an external assessor who visits the course for quality assurance purposes.

CELTA is awarded to candidates who have completed the course and who have met the assessment criteria for all written and practical assignments.

The overall assessment aims for each unit are that candidates should be able to:

  • assess learner needs, and plan and teach lessons which take account of learners' backgrounds, learning preferences and current needs
  • demonstrate language knowledge and awareness and appropriate teaching strategies
  • demonstrate knowledge about language skills and how they may be acquired
  • plan and prepare lessons designed to develop their learners' overall language competence
  • demonstrate an appropriate range of teaching skills at this level and show professional awareness and responsibility

The certificate will be awarded to candidates who meet the course requirements and whose performance meets, or exceeds, the criteria in both assessment components. The outcome of the course is decided on a continuous assessment basis, there is no final examination.
