CELTA Course Content

The Cambridge CELTA is a four week course with a mostly practical approach. You are provided with a solid grounding in teaching skills and techniques. The emphasis is placed on developing awareness and sensitivity to students needs and also on your general language awareness.

You will spend around 80 non-contact hours on the course in addition to the 120 contact hours required to complete the CELTA course. This non-contact time is mostly spent on lesson planning, writing assignments throughout the course but it also includes you pre-course preparation time.

Courses are typically run with 12 trainees divided in two Teaching Practice (or TP) groups, these groups have a maximum of 6 trainees per tutor.

Breakdown of the CELTA course content

There are four elements in total:

1. Input Sessions

This includes:

  • Lesson planning
  • Classroom Management
  • Methodology and lesson frameworks
  • Language analysis from the perspective of a foreign learner
  • Sessions are conducted using the learner-centred methodology approach that is highly encouraged in teaching practice, and in these sessions tutors model teaching techniques and concepts.

2. Teaching Practice

You and your fellow trainees will do 6 hours of teaching practice (around nine or ten lessons) over the four weeks. This teaching practice is supervised and assessed. This is a key part of the course. Trainees break up into smaller groups and teach foreign volunteer students. Trainees receive guidance from the tutors in planning their lessons, and after the lessons there is a group feedback sessions, with oral feedback from other trainees and the tutor. The tutor also gives detailed written feedback on the lesson.

3. Teaching Observation

Trainees observe a minimum of 6 hours of lessons being taught by other experience, CELTA qualified teachers. Up to two of these may be guided video observation. This is a great opportunity to observe a range of teaching styles and techniques as well as a range of teaching contexts.

4. Written Assignments

Based on input and teaching sessions, these are a very practical assimilation tool, which reinforce skills and knowledge development.

CELTA Employment Prospects

The outlook for CELTA graduates is very optimistic in the global ESL employment market. There is a constant growing demand for ELT (English Language Teaching) all over the world and each year it is becoming more and more necessary to have a formal qualification, mostly the CELTA, in order to get employment. Most schools require CELTA as a minimum qualification and most also offer a higher salary for Cambridge CELTA qualified teachers.

During the course you will receive employment advice and also information on other possibilities beyond the CELTA. In the final week of your course, the tutors will give you the benefit of their particular experiences within the employment market. Furthermore, the University of Cambridge work very hard to maintain the status of the CELTA as the number one ELT industry standard internationally.

One of the many benefits of a CELTA qualified teacher is the possibility to work, potentially, anywhere in the world, although visa requirements do vary country to country. To speak generally, the most desirable of location are harder to find work in, due to high competition. A good place to start out is in an emerging country where the ELT industry is experiencing a boom.
