"The best things I did were the CELTA and later on the Delta"

Emma Fraser , United Kingdom
5/5

After having lived in Spain for a few years I decided that I wanted to travel further afield but wasn’t sure how I could work in a country where I didn’t know the language. I had taught some of my Spanish friends the basics in English and have always had a love for languages, so I started to look into teaching courses and found out about CELTA. The thought of being able to live anywhere in the world and have a job really appealed to me and so I did the CELTA in Barcelona in 2005.

Doing the CELTA opened up so many doors for me and soon after completing the course I moved to China where I lived for two years. From China I moved to Chile, Italy and Saudi Arabia which were all amazing, challenging and different experiences. Being an English teacher has really helped me in my own language studies too, (Spanish and Chinese).

I decided to move back to the UK in 2010 and was really surprised at how many students actually want to study here rather than in their countries. The great thing about teaching English in the UK is that the classes are multi-lingual and there’s such a mix of students in any one class which is both fascinating for the students and the teacher. The students learn so much, not just about English but also about other cultures and different ways of life.

I started working at the English Language School that is attached to the Teacher Training Center here in London last summer, there’s a real buzz about working in a central London school.

I started working at the English Language School that is attached to the Teacher Training Center here in London last summer, there’s a real buzz about working in a central London school. As the Language School in London has such a varied amount of courses I’ve had the opportunity to teach not only General English but Exam classes, pronunciation classes and one-one’s which has been great for my personal development as a teacher.

I was hoping in the future to move into teacher training and this is why I recently completed the DELTA here at the Training Center in London, as a Center also offering the CELTA courses, I felt that I could really develop my career in teacher training here.

Before working for the Training Center in London I didn’t really see teaching English as a career with prospects but now I’ve realised that post CELTA, there’re so many different things to explore, and training others to become English teachers was one of them, this is why I did my Delta.

The best things I did were the CELTA and later on the Delta courses because I’ve now found what I really want to do with my career!
