The CELTA program through Springfield Missouri centre was exactly what I hoped for, and more. I chose the online hybrid format so I could do the course while continuing to work, with just two weeks onsite for the teaching practice. All three tutors were professional, very skilled, always encouraging, and kept a good sense of humor.
I really appreciated the slower pace of the online portion, which gave us time to explore the topics in more depth. The two-week teaching practice was intense — prep, teach, get feedback, input session, lesson planning every day (and often long into the night). It was bearable because of our tutors, the students, and our cohort — we had a fun, hard-working group that was very supportive. The living accommodations in Bear Village were convenient, and it was helpful to be able to share resources and ideas while lesson planning in the evenings.
I’ve been able to apply what I learned to my ESL classes as well as non-ESL work (teaching ethics and privacy courses to business professionals). Not only did CELTA at Missouri State make me a better teacher, the CELTA approach changed how I think about teaching, and has helped me enjoy teaching more than ever.
Practical tip: If your teaching practice is in Springfield in January, bring *warm* clothes.
