By Javier Mora, Director of StudyCELTA
It is with a deeply heavy heart that I share the devastating news of the passing of our dear friend, colleague, and long-time StudyCELTA partner, Connor O’Donoghue, who passed away recently at a tragically young age after a short illness.
For over a decade, I had the privilege of working closely with Connor. To know Connor was to know a beautiful soul, a free spirit, and a true force of nature. Hailing from Cork, Ireland, he brought a unique warmth, sharpness, and infectious energy to everything he touched—whether in the world of teacher training, business development or simply a chat over a delicious meal.
Connor’s professional footprint in the English Language Teaching world was immense. As a Cambridge Teacher Training Tutor and brilliant Centre Director, he dedicated his life to quality in education. He travelled and worked around the globe, leaving an indelible positive mark on thousands of people, be they trainees, colleagues or international business partners.
A thought leader and friend
Across our decade-plus partnership, Connor was a cornerstone of our community at StudyCELTA. He was always generous with his expertise, frequently contributing his insights to help aspiring and seasoned teachers navigate their careers.
Over the years, Connor shared his expertise in several key StudyCELTA blog articles, as always, kindly giving back to the community he loved. He shared his wisdom on a whole range of teaching aspects, from complex career decisions and guidance to nervous applicants or those struggling with a course to expert summary on assessment.
He didn’t just train teachers; he built people’s confidence, raised standards, and inspired excellence across the entire industry.
Beyond the profession: A treasured friend
While Connor was a formidable partner in business, it is the personal memories I will treasure most.
I will deeply miss our catch-ups, our long lunches in London, and our annual get-togethers where we would toast to our shared successes, celebrate our great collaboration, and dream up new ideas for the future. Connor had a rare gift for making work feel like a shared adventure. He forged deep, lasting international friendships everywhere he went, always bringing people together with his warmth and humour.
A legacy that remains
Connor’s sudden passing leaves a profound void in our lives and across the global teacher training network. However, his positive influence is far-reaching. Every teacher he trained, every centre he guided, and every colleague he inspired carries a piece of his passion and his memory forward.
So, it just remains for me to say: Connor, my friend, you will never be forgotten. Your legacy will live on for countless years in the classrooms, centres, and hearts of everyone you touched.
Rest in peace, my friend. Long live Connor’s memory.
