About Online DELTA Module 1

Module 1 of the Cambridge DELTA (Diploma in teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is based around a final exam, held two times a year in June and December.

The Online DELTA Module 1 courses offered by our DELTA teacher training centres around the world are designed and developed to prepare you for this exam, which primarily focuses on Understanding Language, Methodology and Resources for Teaching.

While the entirety of DELTA module 1 can be studied by distance, you will need to travel to a Cambridge-accredited DELTA examination centre to take the final exam. This centre could be the accredited centre that is running your online course, or another closer to you. Your DELTA tutor and admissions officer can help you find a convenient location to take the exam once you apply for the online course.

About Online DELTA Module 3

The third module of the DELTA course is assessed by a long-form, written assignment. Candidates on this module can choose to focus on one of two specialist streams; option one, which focuses on needs analysis, syllabus design, course planning and assessment; or option two, which looks at situation analysis, planning and implementing change. Detailed descriptions of these two options are included below.

The online DELTA module 3 course can be studied by distance, from wherever you are based in the world. The aim of the course is to assist you in planning and writing the final assignment, which you can then submit electronically.

Minimum Entry Requirements

The DELTA Course is intended for experienced teachers wishing to extend their professional experience and accept new responsibilities, as it not only demonstrates a commitment to the profession, but is also proof of ability.

It is open to people from all language backgrounds. All participants must have native speaker proficiency, both written and spoken, that enables them to follow the course and complete all assessed and non-assessed elements successfully.

Ideally applicants should:

  • have a minimum of one years’ full time (1,200 hours) experience of teaching English to a variety of levels within the past five years.
  • have a range of teaching experience in different contexts and at different levels.
  • be a graduate and have an initial teaching qualification (i.e. CELTA, Trinity Cert TESOL or equivalent)
  • have a standard of English which will enable you to teach at a range of levels (native-speaker proficiency, such as C2, CPE or IELTS 8+)

We may still accept applicants if they do not strictly meet these requirements but can demonstrate that they would be likely to complete the course successfully. DELTA Module 1 Content

1. Theoretical perspectives on language acquisition and language teaching

  • Historical and current theories of first and second language acquisition
  • How these theories influence teaching methodologies.

2. Different teaching approaches and methodologies, including current developments

  • Teaching methodologies, both mainstream and experimental
  • The effectiveness of these methodologies in different learning environments.

3. Language systems and learners’ linguistic problems

  • Features of language systems (e.g. meaning, form, pronunciation and use)
  • Teaching methodology choices in language systems.

4. Language skills and learners’ problems

  • Features of language skills (e.g. the subskills and strategies needed by learners)
  • Teaching methodology choices in language skills.

5. Knowledge of resources, materials and reference sources for language learning

  • The practical uses of a range of resources in a range of teaching contexts.

6. Key assessment concepts and terminology

  • How to apply key assessment principles, such as validity and reliability, to classroom-based assessment.

DELTA Module 3 Content

Online DELTA Module 3 Option 1: Extending Practice and ELT Specialism

This module focuses on needs analysis, syllabus design, course planning and assessment.

You will carry out an independent investigation, leading to the design of a course programme related to one of the following specialisms:

  • Business English
  • Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) / Embedded ESOL
  • English for Academic Purposes
  • English for Specific Purposes
  • ESOL learners with literacy needs
  • Language development for teachers
  • Language support (e.g. on mainstream teaching programmes, specialist skills support)
  • Teaching English to learners with special requirements, e.g. visual/hearing impairment, dyslexia, autistic spectrum disorders (ASD)
  • Teaching examination classes
  • Teaching in a non-English-speaking environment
  • Teaching in an English-speaking environment
  • Teaching learners online, or through distance/blended learning
  • Teaching monolingual classes
  • Teaching multilingual classes
  • Teaching one-to-one
  • Teaching young learners or young adults (specified age group required, within a 5-year range e.g. 8–13, 14–19).

Online DELTA Module 3 Option 2: English Language Teaching Management

This module focuses on situation analysis, planning and implementing change.

You will carry out an independent situation analysis, leading to the design of a change proposal in one of the following specialisms:

  • Academic management
  • Human resource management
  • Customer service
  • Marketing

To successfully complete this module, you will need to have access to management data from a relevant language teaching context.

How to Choose an Accredited Online DELTA Module 1 & 3 Centre

While the courses listed here are 100% online, your DELTA tutor and the accredited centre are in a specific, physical location. You should choose which accredited centre to take the course through based on several factors, such as time zones, dates, the intensity of each course, and its structure. A further explanation about each accredited centre can be found below.

For Module 1, you will need to attend a Cambridge examination centre to take the exam, which is held every June and December.
