Am I eligible for the CELTA? (What are the entry requirements? Do I need a university education?)

In terms of the basic entry requirements for the CELTA course, these are that you are over 18 (although most schools prefer that you are at least 20 years old), have enough education to enter higher education (i.e. a high school diploma, A-levels or equivalent) and that you can show a native or near-native grasp of the English language (i.e. a strong C1 or IELTS 7.5). You would not need to have previous teaching experience to take the CELTA. Your English level will be tested through the application process (which is free), in the initial application, the pre-interview task and then the interview with the course tutor at your chosen location.

For non-native speakers, you will not need certification of your English level as your English level will be tested through the application process (which is free), in the initial application, the pre-interview task and then the interview with the course tutor at your chosen location. You can get a good indication as to whether your English level is ok to take the CELTA via this page: www.studycelta.com/celta-english-language-test

You would not need to have previous teaching experience to take the CELTA.

Officially, you don’t need a university degree to take the CELTA. Candidates who have completed education, such as secondary school, that would allow them to embark on a university degree are eligible.

You can also take our eligibility test (www.studycelta.com/am-i-eligible) to check if you can apply for a CELTA course.
