CELTA Course Information & Entry Requirements, Sydney

Internationally Recognised Cambridge CELTA Course - (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults)

The most widely recognised qualifications for English language teaching are those offered by the University of Cambridge. Cambridge Certificate (CELTA) and Diploma (DELTA) courses will qualify and prepare you to teach overseas and in Australia.

Today's workplace is in a constant state of change. We change jobs and choose to re-train throughout our working life.

Take the opportunity to go somewhere different, do something new.

Sydney is a destination we recommend, both for the high quality standards of the CELTA course offered there and the fantastic city itself

CELTA Aims:

The Cambridge CELTA course (formerly known as the RSA/Cambridge CTEFLA) leads to an internationally recognised qualification and is intended for people without previous teaching experience who wish to enter the profession of English language teaching to adults. It is also appropriate for those with some EFL experience, but no formal qualification or training, as well as for teachers from other fields who are interested in developing a career in English language teaching.

During the course, participants develop familiarity with the principles of effective teaching and acquire a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners.

Entry Criteria

No previous teaching experience or training is required, but candidates must:

  1. Be at least 18 years old
  2. Have an awareness of language and a competence in both written and spoken English which will enable them to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels (i.e. native or near native English speaker)
  3. Have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers and to successfully complete the written assignments and the assessment of practice teaching
  4. Candidates should normally have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education, meaning having completed high School at least. However, applicants who do not have formal qualifications may be accepted if the screening tasks suggest that they are likely to complete the course successfully)

CELTA Course Assessment in Sydney

Course assessment, which is continuous and integrated, is based on classroom teaching practice and on written assignments. The certificate is awarded to candidates who satisfy all assessment criteria and complete all course requirements.

An external assessor, who is appointed by Cambridge University, visits each course in order to observe practice teaching and to inspect candidates' portfolios of written work. Their role is to standardise grading, recommend final grades and monitor the courses. The University of Cambridge awards final grades and issues Certificates to successful candidates.

The full-time course is very intensive and requires total commitment. In addition to course hours you should allow between three to four hours each evening for lesson preparation and writing assignments and one weekend day would also be required.

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to fulfill the course requirements if you have any other obligations over this period such as a part-time job or a commitment to another course. You should also be in good health and be able to manage the stress arising from an intensive course of this nature.

Dual Qualifications - CELTA & Certificate IV in TESOL

In some cases it is a good idea to have both of these qualificatios. Out training centre in Sydney has organised a blended CELTA and Certificate IV in TESOL course that facilitates getting both at the same time and avoids duplicating activities that serve for gaining both qualifications

CELTA and Certificate IV in TESOL Similarities and differences

  • Both are pre-service qualifications in TESOL and both meet the TESOL requirements of NEAS (www.neas.org.au) Australia for working in accredited language schools in the overseas student sector.
  • The CELTA qualification is awarded by University of Cambridge ESOL.
  • The Cert IV in TESOL is awarded under the Australian Qualifications Framework by a registered training organisation.
  • Both courses can be taken intensively (4 week course) or as a part time (12 week) course.
  • Course content and assessment for CELTA and Certificate IV in TESOL are similar: Teaching practice, feedback, aided lesson development, assignments, no final exam.

Having the CELTA Only:

  • CELTA is recognised in Australia and throughout the world. Some employers (e.g. overseas, many private colleges in Australia catering to overseas students) prefer their teachers to have the CELTA.
  • If you’re planning to work overseas or in a normal English language college for overseas students in Australia, just do CELTA. There is no need for the extra work and stress of doing two identical qualifications.

Having the 40649SACert IV in TESOL Only:

  • The 40649SACert IV in TESOL is recognised primarily in Australia.
  • The 40649SA Cert IV in TESOL is designed to provide knowledge and skills for working within the competency based Australian VET sector. Australian based vocational training colleges, schools for adult literacy, aboriginal English language projects, NGO organisational training for Australia and overseas prefer 40649SA Cert IV in TESOL.
  • If you are looking for funding, you may get it for Cert IV in TESOL.

Advantages of a Dual Qualification: CELTA and Certificate IV in TESOL

  • Flexibility and open options: Both are recognised in Australia but a dual qualification can give flexibility to work in the vocational training sector at home or to work in the Language School sector overseas.
  • Funding: Where a grant is available, some government bodies will only fund participants doing Australian recognised courses, such as Cert IV in TESOL.

Blended CELTA and Certificate IV in TESOL Course Structure

Step 1 - Face to Face

Do the CELTA course together with the many units of the Cert IV in TESOL that are exactly the same. You are simultaneously assessed against two different sets of criteria.

Step 2 - Online

Complete the remaining learning activities and written assessment for Cert IV TESOL tasks online.

Dual Qualification Workload

The duration of the Cert IV in TESOL is 20 hours more than the CELTA. The additional 20 hours are completed online after completing the CELTA course.

Time limit to completing the online component: Normally we expect this to be completed within 2 weeks of the end of the full time course and within 4 weeks of the end of the part time course.

Should I take the the Cert IV TESOL or the CELTA or both? What's the difference between the Cert IV TESOL and the CELTA?

In a nutshell:The Cambridge CELTA meets all Australian government requirements for teachers who wish to work in English language schools in the ELICOS sector (teaching language students from overseas).

CELTA is recognised by key accrediting bodies in Australia and overseas. Most language schools prefer CELTA to any other pre-service qualification because CELTA has higher entry standards and more validity.

The Vocational Education and Training sector (e.g. teaching ESL in remote Aboriginal communities or workplace training for migrants) is where employers often prefer the Cert IV in TESOL because it is a recognised Australian qualification.

If you think you might look for work in Australia outside the mainstream language school sector, it’s worth considering Cert IV in TESOL instead of CELTA.

Alternatively, if you want to keep your options open for a wider range of contexts, you could take advantage of our joint qualification package of CELTA + Cert IV in TESOL.

The CELTA Trainers in Sydney: truly inspiring! Always ready with new ways of approaching something, always a million ideas up their sleeves!

It was a very interesting experience to be back in the place of a learner. As a teacher, you can become a bit distanced and your methods can become stale. This course made me re-examine my style and methods and rid myself of some lazy habits. Finishing the CELTA course raised my self-esteem and my confidence and I was lucky enough to get a job very soon after finishing the course.

I loved the way the CELTA tutors made us do the tasks, rather than just tell us about them.

I have remembered so many lesson ideas due to that. The mix of people was fascinating – all very different, yet we bonded well and supported each other greatly. I liked doing teaching practice with real foreign students and although it was nerve wracking, we were among friendly, supportive tutors and classmates.

The CELTA Tutors here in Sydney were truly inspiring! Always ready to suggest new ways of approaching something, always a million ideas up their sleeves! They were supportive and encouraging.

The classes were packed with useful tips, lesson ideas, and career advice.

It’s an intense course and we worked really hard but still had a lot of fun.

The resources at the Training Center in Sydney were excellent, the teaching practice is with real learners and we got to observe real English lessons on site.

I had been a teacher for many years before CELTA and wasn’t sure if I needed to do it...

I had been a teacher for many years before CELTA and wasn’t sure if I needed to do it for any other reason than the paper qualification, but it turned out to be one of the best things I’ve ever done. I learned so much and I feel I have really raised my game.

Our tips to help you get through the CELTA intensive course

Make sure you have the decks clear of work and other study as you will be VERY VERY BUSY.

Forget the chores. Make sure you have the emotional and practical support from friends and family at home - as you will be VERY VERY BUSY

Make sure you are in a good state of physical and emotional health to endure long days of work for a month, daily teaching and teaching feedback which may not always be positive. Having said that, Trainers are very supportive on the CELTA course, but they also have to tell you when you haven't done something well!

Put your social life on hold for a bit. If people care about you, they'll understand.
