DELTA Course Entry Criteria - London
All applicants for the DELTA course in London must have:
- Experience: At least two years' full time teaching English to adults (approximately 1,200 hours) within the last 5 years, involving work in different contexts to a variety levels
- Education: Candidates are usually university graduates or qualified teachers and have a Cambridge ESOL CELTA or equivalent.
- English: Applicants must have a highly developed awareness of language and sufficient competence in English, both written and spoken, to enable them to follow the course and complete all assessed elements.
DELTA Course Structure & Content
The DELTA course in London is a part-time course, the duration is 16 weeks in order to complete the 3 modules. However, trainees can take either 1, 2 or the 3 DELTA Modules.
The Training Centre London delivers the DELTA over 16 weeks as a single course (all three modules being run concurrently). However, individual modules or combinations of modules can be run individually for candidates who may not wish or need to complete all of them.
Each module assumes the knowledge and competence gained in the previous module(s). Therefore, the usual order for the modules will be from Module 1 through to Module 3. However, candidates may choose to take the modules in any order if this is appropriate to their needs and context.
The majority of candidates need all three modules and will take them at the same time but those taking individual modules will be able to complete them when they wish.
DELTA Timetable
The DELTA course in London is a part-time course, the duration is 16 weeks in order to complete the 3 modules. However, trainees can take either 1, 2 or the 3 DELTA Modules.
Theory sessions are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 18:30 - 21:30 and on two Saturdays from 10:00 - 16:00 (for mock exam practice).
Teaching practice sessions are every 3rd week (possibly starting in Week 1) on Tuesday and Thursday from 18:30 - 20:30. Candidates will teach and be observed and prior to that are expected to have observed the class and discussed ideas for their lesson with the class teacher.
Candidates are also required to do ten hours of observations of DELTA qualified teachers and/or other DELTA trainees.
DELTA – Details of each module
The DELTA course is a modular course comprising of three modules. Candidates may choose to enter a single module or any combination of modules.
Each module is separately certificated, allowing candidates to receive credit for each module successfully completed. The information provided on the back of each module certificate will outline the aims and content of the module and how it fits into the DELTA framework.
On successfully achieving a Pass in all three modules you can order an overall certificate conferring your full DELTA status.
Module 1: Understanding Language, Methodology and Resources for Teaching
Module 1 focuses on the background to teaching and learning ESOL in a range of contexts and is assessed via a written examination.
This module is made up of 6 units:
- Theoretical perspectives on language acquisition and language teaching
- Different approaches and methods including current developments
- Language systems and learners' linguistic problems
- Language skills and learners' problems
- Knowledge of resources, materials and reference sources for language learning
- Key concepts and terminology related to assessment
Module 2: Developing Professional Practice
Module 2 focuses on developing professional practice your awareness and expertise in relation to the principles and practice of teaching ESOL in a range of contexts.
This module is assessed via a portfolio of coursework, including observed lessons, written assignments, and an externally-assessed lesson observation.
This module is made up of 7 units:
- The language learner and the language learning context
- Preparation for teaching adult learners of English
- Evaluating, selecting and using resources and materials for teaching purposes
- Managing and supporting learning
- Evaluation of lesson preparation and teaching
- Observation / evaluation of other teachers' lessons
- Professionalism and opportunities for professional development
Module 3: Extending Practice and ELT Specialism
Module 3 focuses on a specialist option (e.g. YL, ESOL, ESP, 1-1). It is designed to broaden your knowledge of a chosen specialism and to develop your understanding of syllabus design, testing and assessment.
Module 3 input sessions will be generic across all areas, and you will be expected to tailor the material to your particular specialist focus. Individual support will be provided where the tutors have some expertise in this specialist area.
This module is assessed via an extended written assignment.
This module is made up of 6 units:
- Research into specialist areas
- Syllabus design: principles, influences on, methodological effects of and major syllabus types as applied to the specific learning context
- Designing syllabus and teaching programmes to meet the needs of learners in the specific context of your selected specialist area
- Course design and development in the specific context of your selected specialist area
- The principles and practice of testing and assessment and application to your specialist area
- Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness and quality of courses and programmes of study
You will be supported throughout by professional, qualified trainers with extensive ELT experience. In addition, you will also have access to library resources including professional books, publications, multimedia titles and internet access.
DELTA Workload
The DELTA is a postgraduate qualification and as such applicants can expect the workload of the course to be very demanding. In addition to attending the twice weekly input sessions, we estimate that participants spend most evenings in a week and at least one full day at the weekend doing coursework. The level of commitment and hard work required cannot be underestimated.

DELTA Components of Assessment
Module One assessment is via a written examination.
Questions set are in a practical context which assumes that candidates have a practical background.
Module Two assessment is via a combination of coursework (including observed lessons), written assignments, and an externally-assessed lesson observation.
In the written assignments, you will need to analyse, explain and justify selected content and approaches taken.
Module Three assessment is via an extended written assignment in the form of a practice based research project.

How to Apply – DELTA London
- If you believe you cover the minimum requirements to be considered as a candidate for any of the courses mentioned above, ask for the application package of the course that interests you.
- Note: The demand for vacancies on these courses is very high. Applicants are advised to apply well in advance before the start of a course, although, occasionally, there could be places available due to last-minute cancellations.
- Prospective trainees must complete the pre-Interview task, fill in the enrolment form and return them by email to the Programmes Coordinator. When emailing the documents, attaching an updated version of the prospective trainees CV, a scanned copy of the initial TEFL qualification (e.g. CELTA) and of the higher academic qualification (e.g. Bachelor Degree) is also necessary.
- Applicants who have satisfactorily completed the application package and tasks included in it may be invited to attend an interview shortly after this date at the school or on the telephone if you are based near London.
- Successful applicants will receive an "offer of a place" on the course of their choice immediately, if there is a place available.
- After receiving an invoice from the School, the deposit must be paid within 7 days of the place being offered in order to secure your place.
- The outstanding balance is due 4 weeks, at the latest, before the course starts, depending on the date of acceptance.
- Note: There is room sometimes for last minute applications due to cancellations and therefore, room for the possibility of receiving late payments, but always, before starting date.
How to Pay
Payments (deposit & balance) can be made directly to the School via Bank Transfer (add £15 for bank charges) or debit / credit card (there is a 3% surcharge for credit cards) – all major cards accepted, except Diner’s Club and American Express.
Conditions of Enrolment
Please note that enrolment on our courses is subject to the following:
- Teaching done as part of the course or scheme is unpaid.
- Changes in the policy of Cambridge ESOL, be they administrative or academic, may force changes to the details outlined in our information.
- Deposits are non-refundable.
- You must pay the balance of your course fees no later than 4 weeks before your course begins. Otherwise, you may be placed on a reserve list and risk losing your place. We will make other arrangements for you if yours is a late booking or your interview date is within 3 weeks of the start of your course.
- Course cancellation fees: if you cancel your course more than 4 weeks before the course starts - full refund of course fees less cancellation fee £100 in addition to deposit £100; if you cancel your course less than 4 weeks before the course starts - no refund of course fees. You also lose the Accommodation Finding Fee and Homestay deposit (if applicable) if you book accommodation in London and give less than 7 days notice of cancellation.
- Course fees include moderation fees, which are non-refundable.
- Examination fees are payable by the Training Centre only where candidates take the examinations at the Training Centre London; where candidates wish to take the examinations in another location there may be an additional fee.
- The course fee includes the moderation fees only in the year in which the course is taken.
- If you submit a written assignment or take a mock examination after the course deadline, there will be a charge of £30 per assignment or paper to be marked.
- Should you fail to take one of your classroom teaching observations on any course, there will normally be no opportunity for you to re-take this, but if you are allowed to re-take this observation, you will be charged a fee of £50.
- The Training Centre cannot guarantee that the requested course will take place if there are insufficient candidates enrolled on the course; if the Training Centre has to cancel a course, a full refund of fees will be made to candidates.
- Please note that there are no refunds if you leave the course once it has started. However, in the case of extreme or unavoidable circumstances such as serious illness, we may allow you to join a later course upon payment of a second course deposit (£100). It will be at the Training Centre’s absolute discretion to deem whether or not the circumstances were extreme or unavoidable. The date for joining a later course would be mutually agreed between you and the Training Centre London. Courses may only be deferred once.
