Cambridge CELTA Certificate Course: Bournemouth, England
Teacher Training in Bournemouth, England
CELTA Course Aims
To provide introductory training if you have little or no previous experience of teaching languages. It may also be suitable if you have some experience, but little previous training.
CELTA Course Entry Requirements
- The recommended minimum age is 20, although if you are between the ages of 18 and 20 we can accept you if we feel you will benefit from the course.
- Applicants must have a standard of education which would allow entry to Higher Education.
- They must also have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to follow the course and have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become an effective teacher and to complete successfully the written assignments and the assessment of teaching practice.
CELTA Course Content
The course is highly practical in emphasis and will require a lot of hard work and commitment from you.
It is designed to enable you to:
- develop your language awareness
- appreciate the cultural and individual needs of learners
- become familiar with the principles and practice of effective English language teaching
- develop basic skills for teaching adults
- identify and exploit appropriate resources and materials
- identify opportunities for future professional development
You will be kept fully informed of your progress and will have the opportunity to discuss your work in detail during your individual tutorials.
The CELTA is awarded to those who pass each of the two assessed components of the course:
- Planning and teaching
- Classroom-related written assignments
The assessment is validated by an external assessor, appointed by Cambridge, who visits the course to assess the general standard of the course work. There is no final practical or written examination.
With your certificate we provide a written report, indicating your strengths and weaknesses, and certificates and reports are sent out approximately one month after the end of the course, when the results have been validated by Cambridge.
CELTA Course Formats
The full-time course lasts four weeks and is highly intensive. Teaching practice and lesson observation take place at the Centre.

Bournemouth Online CELTA Course FAQs
How will the course work?
Input
The content and syllabus cover the same areas as the face-to-face courses at ITTC, but for the CELTA Online all the course input will be done online in a virtual classroom. This will allow you some flexibility to fit the work in around your other commitments.
Teaching Practice
You will teach for a total of six hours, as on any other CELTA course, and this will mean coming to our training centre each Saturday during the course.
How much time will I have to devote to the course?
You will have to be available each Saturday and Wednesday that the course runs.
- For the online component, there isn't a set number of hours, but we can give you an idea of what will be involved.
- On face-to-face courses our candidates have approximately 120 contact hours.
- Time looking over their notes from input, completing assignment and preparing their lessons.
What do I have to do during the course?
Input
The online content is split into 30 separate units, and the average unit will take around 2 hours to complete. Although you will have deadlines for completing units, you will also have the flexibility of working at times to suit you. On some tasks you will work independently, on others you will collaborate with your colleagues on the course. As you work through the units, you will have support and feedback from your online tutor.
You will be expected to contribute to the online forum, and each week you will need to set aside one hour on Thursday evenings to participate in the weekly "liveroom". Here, you, your colleagues and your tutor will all be present in a virtual classroom to discuss the units so far and to work together on tasks.
Assignments
There are 4 written assignments to complete – as on any CELTA course – and these are spread out over the 13 weeks of the course. When you submit an assignment, your tutor will get back to you with the result (the assignments are graded pass or fail), and will give you feedback and any advice necessary.
If an assignment hasn't met all the criteria, you can then edit it and resubmit it.
As on every CELTA, you must pass a minimum of 3 written assignments (of course we would expect you to pass them all)
Observations
As part of the CELTA, you will need to observe experienced teachers at work in the classroom. On our online course, some of this will be completed online, and some when you are here for teaching practice on Saturdays.
Teaching Practice
We have arranged classes at our training centre in Bournemouth. From the second week of the course, you will spend each Saturday at the training centre to teach a lesson in the morning, and to get feedback on your teaching in the afternoon. Your tutors will also be able to give you help and support in planning for your next lesson the following Saturday.
Tutorials
It is really important to know how you are progressing on the CELTA Online, so you will have online tutorials with your tutor – one in week 5, a second in week 8 and a third in the final stages of the course. This means that you are aware of your strengths and areas to work on at all times.
What are the Technical Requirements?
Obviously, you need to be computer literate! Otherwise the CELTA Online means that there are minimum requirements for your computer and the software you have.
Equipment
- computer monitor – we recommend a screen resolution of 1024x768 pixels
- internet connection – we recommend you use a reliable broadband-speed connection to be able to handle progressively downloaded videos and virtual classroom sessions with audio.
- a good quality USB headset with headphones and microphone built in
- access to a scanner and printer (although these will be available for you to use at the training centre)
Operating System
We recommend the following minimum hardware specifications to run the course:
- Windows XP 800MHz Processor with 256MB RAM or
- Windows Vista 1GHz processor with 1GB RAM or
- Windows 7 1GHz processor with 1GB RAM or
- Mac OSX 10.3 or higher 1GHz processor with 1GB RAM
You may be able to run the course on machines with lower specification hardware although you may experience performance issues with media-rich activities.
Please note: The course will NOT run on an iPad.
The download speed of the videos included on the course will depend both on your hardware configuration and the speed of your broadband connection. If the streaming stops after a short while then it is advisable to wait until the download is complete.
Software
a) Web browser: You will need an up-to-date web browser to run the course. We recommend the following browsers for the Cambridge CELTA Course Online:
- Firefox 3 or higher
- Safari
- Internet Explorer 8
The course can also be run in other browsers. However, some features of the interface may exhibit bugs in non-recommended browsers.
Please do NOT use the browser Chrome - some of the course features will not work in this browser.
b) Microsoft Word: You will need Microsoft Word for the course (either PC or Mac version). Mac users who do not have a copy of Word installed may wish to use the open source (free) Libre office: http://www.libreoffice.org although not all course features will work as well as Microsoft Word.
c) Required plugins: Your browser will require the following plugins to be installed and enabled:
- Adobe Flash Player 9 or higher – http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer
- The latest Java player – http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
- The latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader – http://get.adobe.com/reader
If you are not using your own computer please note that you may need to contact your institution's I.T. administrator to be able to change your browser settings or install plugins.
